Julian is located 4,220 feet high in the beautiful Cuyamaca mountains, 60 miles from Downtown San Diego. This mountainous town is a removal from beach life with lots of wilderness charm and bountiful apple orchards for the cider lover. Home of San Diego County’s first and only Goldrush, Julian was founded during the civil war as a mining town. The entire town of Julian is a Designated Historical District with original store fronts, an old fashioned soda fountain, tours of gold mines and the oldest continuous operating hotel in Southern California, the Julian Hotel. Unique to San Diego, Julian offers all four seasons, including sprinklings of snow for winter-lovers. Springtime brings breathtaking daffodil blossoms and fall is the harvest of several varieties of apple.
Unique gifts and antiques stores are hosted by historic buildings, bed and breakfasts replace motels, and a horse-drawn carriage is wonderful town ride on a beautiful day. Julian is home to the California wolf center, the Pioneer museum, and star gazing at Observers Inn. The Cuyamaca Rancho State Park offers a lake for fishing, camping, boating, and cabins that have lake views. Hiking, walking, and horseback riding can be enjoyed on marked trails with terrific wildlife watching. The Volcan Mountain Preserve is home to wildlife, spring wildflowers, and several species of oak and pine. Wine tasting is a favorable pastime at several local wineries with a variety of tastes and tours offered. And, of course the cider mill offers fresh-picked apples, cider, and homemade pies.
