The inland city of Santee has a terrain of rolling hills and subdivisions are settled atop them. The San Diego river flows through the middle of the city and Cowles Mountain reigns above. Residents enjoy the country feel of this community that is just 20-25 miles from Downtown San Diego. Crime rates are very low and housing is very affordable.
Newer and bigger Santee homes are built on the sloping hills and sparse land surrounds the outer limits. This gives the community a desert-like feel. Santee schools rank among the state’s 70th to 90th percentile and education is of high concentration in this suburban family community. Santee Trolley Square is the city’s center for business, commerce, transportation, entertainment, and dining. Facilities include variety stores, chain restaurants, a food court, a 250-seat amphitheater, and a 104-acre office park, including Hartford Financial services and its 500 employees. Other retail spaces include warehouse stores and more dining, accounting for one of the highest grossing centers in San Diego County.
Santee offers a golf course, sports for both kids and adults, a Boys and Girls Club, a YMCA, and a teen center. Seven artificial lakes enjoy fishing, hiking along, boating, and adjacent camp sites. Mission Trails Regional Park has excellent hiking and is not far. There is a Kaiser Medical Center in neighboring El Cajon. Highway 52 connects Santee to Interstate 15 which runs north and south, allowing better commutes than before its existence.
